PROTECT YOUR JEWELRY AND VALUABLES
PROTECT YOUR JEWELRY AND VALUABLES
One of the best ways to protect your jewelry, silver, and other valuables against loss or theft is to maintain a thorough inventory. Photograph each item, record its identifying characteristics, and keep the information in a safe place. These records can help establish ownership, assist in identifying recovered property, and provide valuable documentation for insurance purposes if an item is lost or stolen.
HOW TO CREATE A USEFUL JEWELRY AND SILVER INVENTORY
Rather than simply listing an item as “a silver pitcher,” take the time to describe it in greater detail. Record the maker's marks, hallmarks, inscriptions, distinctive features, dimensions, and weight. For jewelry, include the type of metal, gemstones, markings, and any identifying characteristics. Take clear photographs from several angles, including close-ups of hallmarks, signatures, and other distinguishing details.
Fine auction catalogues provide excellent examples of detailed descriptions. For instance, a 2011 Christie's auction catalogue described a silver pitcher as follows:
“A George II Silver Hot Water Jug bearing the mark of Philip Goddard, London, 1751.”
The description continued by noting its form, circular spreading foot, gadrooned borders, and heart-shaped spout aperture. It also recorded the height and weight.
This level of detail helps distinguish one object from another and creates a much more useful record than a simple item name.
You can view the original example in the Christie's auction catalogue:

RECORD THE WEIGHT OF YOUR GOLD AND SILVER
When weighing precious metals, record the measurement in grams, troy ounces, or pennyweights (dwt). These are commonly used units in the precious-metals trade. Always record the unit alongside the weight to avoid confusion.
Remember that the total weight of a piece of jewelry may include gemstones, non-gold components, or other materials. The total weight alone does not establish the amount or value of the precious metal it contains.
If you don't have an accurate scale, you're welcome to visit our Poughkeepsie location. We will weigh your gold and silver items for you at no charge.
KEEP YOUR RECORDS SAFE
Store your inventory, photographs, receipts, appraisals, and any available certificates or previous insurance records in a secure location. Consider keeping a backup separate from your home, such as in secure cloud storage. Avoid publicly sharing photographs or detailed information about valuable possessions.
A well-maintained inventory is a simple but important step toward protecting your jewelry and other valuables.
